A pond is not just a beautiful addition to your backyard, but it also serves many purposes. It is very beneficial for the environment; it helps control mosquitoes, acts as a water source especially in times of drought and is the most natural way to filter and clean water. A pond generates oxygen too and this can help with some plant diseases.

But apart from its environmental benefits, you will also want to keep your pond clean at its best. And while you may often hear about draining the pond and refilling it to ensure that it is totally free from all dirt or debris that settles on its floor, this method is rather costly and time-consuming.

Also, cleaning ponds by sticking your arm inside tends to be quite dangerous since there are hidden spots everywhere.

The most expensive part of the cleaning process is the disposal of the sludge. In Belgium, this sludge has to be analyzed before it is spread on fields or processed in sorting plants. In many countries, the disposal of sludge is subject to strict regulations.

How to treat siltation of a water body?

The development of silt in a water body is caused by the decomposition of organic matter. A pond surrounded by trees will more quickly fall victim to excessive siltation. This is also the case for ponds that are loaded with animals or fish, but also with human activity (baiting, excessive fishing, adding fish, …).

Silt is an excellent fertilizer (usually to be tested before spreading on fields). It tends to promote the growth of water lilies or algae.

It will tend to accelerate the eutrophication of the water body which will be invaded by plants and mud. This phenomenon will create in the long run an imbalance, oxygen deficiencies and the death of the fauna and flora. It is often at this point that the pond becomes a marsh.

How to treat silt without cleaning a pond?

Silt is, in fact, a concentrate of nutrients composed of organic matter. It is often composed of significant quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus. There are treatments based on bacteria to treat large bodies of water.
